Jan 10, 2018 Bund Rate pushes Up

January 10th, 2018

Yesterday we mentioned that BoJ was cutting back long term bond buying a small bit and didn’t think that it would matter much. Well, German Bunds and our Bonds have been moving up on it, plus Europe is really adding a lot more supply out of Italy, Portugal and Germany. China started OMO again after 12 days but Shanghai Futures had copper flat with China’s CPI coming in below estimates at 1.8 vs 1.9, yet higher then Nov. PPI beat estimates but was lower from last month. This gives room for PBoC to tighten if it wants of course. Futures are down a bit at .12% in the second hour of the europe trade. Bitcoin is again in the 13,000 range.

From Reuters…The rise in yields is giving rise to some speculation among investors as to whether this is the start of a sustained bear market for bonds, said Segesser of DZ Bank.

“We have had some strong growth numbers at the start of the year and there’s some questions on whether the central banks will finally change their stance,” he said.

In fact, Rabobank analysts on Tuesday sent out a research note asking the question: “Have we finally entered a bond bear market?”

The analysts said in the note a global recovery and potential central bank action are possible drivers of a sustained sell off in bonds, though they stopped short of saying that this trend has begun.

As far as monetary policy is concerned, many investors took the Bank of Japan’s decision to buy fewer long-dated government bonds than expected this week as one sign of a possible shift in the central bank’s stance.

Investors will look for further hints on that front when U.S. policymakers Charles Evans, Robert Kaplan and James Bullard are all due to speak in public.

From Reuters…BEIJING, Jan 10 (Reuters) – China’s consumer inflation accelerated to 1.8 percent in December, official data showed on Wednesday.

The consumer price index (CPI) had been expected to rise 1.9 percent from a year earlier, compared with an increase of 1.7 percent in November.

The producer price index rose 4.9 percent from a year earlier, compared with the previous month’s rise of 5.8 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on its website.

Analysts polled by Reuters had predicted the rise in the PPI to slow to 4.8 percent in December. (Reporting by Beijing Monitoring Desk; Editing by Sam Holmes)

I got a roof inspector coming over today. As you might remember that little Hurricane Harvey … and we had alot of damage here. I had fence down in 3 places, plus tree damage. And a 20 year old roof. And a small water spot on the ceiling in the garage of all places. Whirlwind of activity just getting everything inspected.

Sam’s club closings. Looks like none here – all in Houston or SanAntonio. I haven’t gone to Sam’s since about 1 year after Costco opened here. There is both a map and a list if you scroll down far enough. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/12/heres-a-map-of-where-walmart-is-closing-more-than-60-sams-club-stores.html
